In many cases, the set goals are malleable. It is not uncommon, that after having carefully and consciously set our goals to be achieved, during the coaching process, something more important, more prominent comes up from deeper inside, changing the targets of the sessions. The coach helps us connect with what’s inside us, find the fundamental essence of our goals and problems, and build the process from there.

 

My best example of this is from many years ago, when as a manager at a multinational company I got my first coach to help me with a problem in my field. At the beginning of the meetings, I set out with the goal of bringing together the many projects in my area, better prioritizing them, and delivering the results sufficiently. In the coaching process, we then “drilled” deeper and deeper into me, soon brought to the surface the frustration and anxiety due to the pressure to perform and expectations that kept me shackled in a position on a daily basis. All of this made me realize that I was not in the right place and position, and after that I changed jobs, with a piece of mind, win-win.

Another interesting story comes from my clients, similarly in management positions, who turned to me saying that they wanted to assert themselves better in front of their managers, they wanted to be more involved, to be given more authority. So at the beginning of our session, we started with a strong focus on relationship building and personal branding. As we got into the process, there were the topics of insecurity and self-doubt coming up, the focus changed to the strengthening of self-confidence combined with an in-depth journey of self-awareness.

The set goals are achievable in most cases, the key to success depends on the coachee’s determination, the depth of the coach-coachee relationship, the “reality” and complexity of the set goal and of course, the amount of time available.
